What if, instead of constantly asking ourselves, “What’s wrong with me?”, we started asking, “What’s already working?”
This is one of the reasons I’ve become so drawn to Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT).
It’s easy to get caught up in our problems, replaying conversations, overthinking our choices, and feeling like we need to fix ourselves before moving forward.
SFBT invites us to look beyond the problem and explore the exceptions. When did things feel a little easier? What helped, even just a little?
Maybe it was going for a walk, calling a friend, or listening to your favourite song. These small moments can offer clues about what helps us feel grounded and what we need when things get difficult.
Despite the name it's also important to understand our feelings, recognize our patterns, and learn more about ourselves. When we understand what we're experiencing, we can begin to identify what we need and work toward meaningful change.
As someone learning to become a counsellor, I love that SFT reminds me that you are the expert of your own life. My role is to be curious and help you recognize strengths and possibilities you may have overlooked.
Maybe change doesn't start with fixing what's wrong. Maybe it starts with understanding ourselves and building on what's already working.
