Okay, Hear Me Out: What If Music Is Already Helping Us Cope?

Have you ever had a difficult day and immediately reached for your favourite song?

Sometimes, without realizing it, we’re already using music to help us navigate our emotions.

This is one reason I find music and emotional regulation so interesting. Music can help us slow down when we're overwhelmed, find motivation when we're feeling stuck, or feel understood when we don't quite have the words to explain what we're experiencing.

And sometimes, regulating our emotions doesn't mean trying to make a difficult feeling disappear. It can mean allowing ourselves to sit with it. Maybe listening to a song that matches our sadness helps us feel less alone before we're ready to transition to something more uplifting.

For me, music has always been something I could never imagine living without. There's something about live music that makes me feel incredibly present. Sometimes, standing in a crowd and experiencing music together genuinely makes me fall in love with life again. For a few hours, everything else fades away, and I can simply enjoy being there.

Maybe that's part of what makes music so powerful. It doesn't always need to solve anything. Sometimes, it simply gives us space to feel.

You can even create playlists based on what you need:

“I need to calm down” — soothing, familiar songs

“I need a boost” — energetic, motivating songs

“I need to feel understood” — songs that reflect your emotions

As someone learning to become a counsellor, I'm reminded that coping isn't always about finding an immediate solution. It's also about understanding our feelings, recognizing what we need, and discovering what helps us navigate difficult moments.

So, the next time you're feeling overwhelmed, ask yourself: “What do I need to hear right now?”

Maybe the goal isn't to change how you feel, but to give yourself the space to feel it.
